Thanks for Attending the 2022 Conference

Presented by Riverside Trauma Center & MindWise Innovations

Suicide prevention is more than building awareness and understanding - or we know it should be. This year’s virtual conference will discuss practical strategies for what we can be doing in our schools, workplaces, healthcare, and behavioral health settings to directly address and positively influence a safer, more resilient future.

The event will offer keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and panel discussions that range from the basics of suicide prevention in the workplace to clinical topics such as how to shape future prevention strategies through stories of hope and lived experience. Speakers will also touch on critical topics like addressing social justice and equity issues in suicide prevention, the role of technology, and the future of community mental health.

Read on to see the full agenda, how to register, information on continuing education, and a list of frequently asked questions. We'll also be continuously adding more information on our growing lineup of speakers.

Morning Keynote with Vic Armstrong, MSW

Mental Health and Suicide in Historically Marginalized Communities: Perception vs Reality

Watch the Keynote >

Stigma around mental illness continues to be one of the leading taboos in the African American community. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, or worst-case scenario, suicide, there is a longstanding belief in the African American community that the impact of these taboo subjects is the problem of “the other.”

Though communities of color, because of socioeconomic challenges, may be at higher risk for poor mental health, there is a significant gap in accessing mental health resources, by Blacks as compared to Whites.

As a result of stigma, socioeconomic challenges, and the added stressors of systemic racism and lack of access to culturally competent mental health resources, mental health challenges continue to compound and suicide rates continue to rise, in the African American community.

In this session Victor Armstrong will discuss the historic challenges of African Americans as it pertains to mental wellness and suicide, while also discussing the impact of implicit bias and provider perception on the delivery of behavioral healthcare.

10 Reasons Why Supporting Behavioral Health in the Workplace is a Trend That's Here to Stay

Watch the session >

While the global pandemic surfaced mental health needs in unprecedented ways, behavioral health has impacted the workplace for decades. Mental health and substance use show up through absenteeism, presenteeism, low morale, and escalating healthcare costs. Employers are wise to provide a culture of care and sustainable behavioral health resources for their employees, for the good of the current and future workforce.

This presentation will review ten priority reasons to address behavioral health in the workplace and action steps to get the process moving.

Shaping Prevention Strategies Through Stories of Hope and Lived Experience

Watch the session >

Learn from those who have been there. Join our diverse panel of suicide prevention advocates who will share how their journeys through significant personal challenges inform their hope for future suicide prevention strategies. What strategies made an impact in our panelists’ lives and what strategies were missing? How do their experiences shape their vision for prevention and intervention in the future?

These first-person narratives of strength and resilience will help us to further facilitate those same characteristics in the people we work with every day.

Afternoon Keynote with Rory O'Connor, PhD FAcSS

When It Is Darkest:                          Understanding Suicide Risk

Watch the session >

In this presentation, Rory O'Connor, PhDFAcSS will draw from his new book When It Is Darkest: Why People Die by Suicide and What We Can Do To Prevent It (Vermilion, 2021). His aim in the book is to get to the heart of this most tragic of human outcomes, challenging myths and misunderstandings as well as bringing together the personal and the professional.

Suicide and self-harm are major public health concerns with complex aetiologies which encompass a multifaceted array of risk and protective factors. In this presentation, he will dispel some of the myths associated with suicide as well as describe the Integrated Motivational–Volitional (IMV) Model of Suicidal Behaviour (O’Connor & Kirtley, 2018). The IMV model outlines the pathways to the emergence of suicidal ideation and the transition from suicidal thoughts to acts of suicide. This tripartite model maps the relationship between background factors and trigger events, and the development of suicidal ideation/intent through to suicidal behaviour. Crucially, the IMV model identifies clinical targets for treatment. As he has done in When It Is Darkest, he will present an overview of some of his clinical, experimental and intervention studies to illustrate how psychological, physiological and social factors increase suicide risk and what we all can do to tackle suicide.

He will also highlight the psychological evidence of what works to prevent suicidal behaviour. In addition, he will outline some other ongoing work on suicide prevention research as well as illustrating the opportunities to mitigate the risk of the longer term impacts of COVID-19 on suicide risk. The wider clinical implications for the prevention of suicide will also be discussed.

What is your grievance policy?

Riverside Community Care (Riverside) is fully committed to conducting all Continuing Education activities for which Social Work CE’s are awarded in strict conformance with the ACE Requirements. Riverside will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content, and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Lead LICSW Consultant (SW CE Chair), and the Training Committee Chair in consultation with the members of the Riverside Training Committee, the Riverside Social Work Continuing Education Committee, and the Riverside Director of Quality Management.

While Riverside goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the continuing education staff which require intervention and/or action on the part of the staff or an officer of Riverside. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance or expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken.

1. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The SW CE Chair will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.

2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the SW CE Chair and the Director of Training will mediate and will be the final arbitrators. If the participant requests action, the SW CE Chair and the Director of Training and Professional Development will:

  1. attempt to move the participant to another workshop or
  2. provide a credit for a subsequent workshop or
  3. provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the lack of provision of appropriate accommodations requested by persons with disabilities, the SW CE Chair and the Director of Training will mediate and will be the final arbitrators. If the participant requests action, the SW CE Chair and the Director of Training and Professional Development will:

  1. attempt to move the participant to another workshop or
  2. provide a credit for a subsequent workshop or
  3. provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.

Actions 3b and 3c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.

4. If the grievance concerns Riverside’s CE program, in a specific regard, the SW CE Chair will attempt to arbitrate.

Please contact Jenny Huynh or Helen Boyle to submit a complaint or if you have additional questions.
